My go to travel book is ALWAYS Lonely Planet publications. They provide itineraries, nail it when it comes to restaurants to try out, and provide history of all the sites you plan to visit. Bonus! They come with maps and when you are finished with the books they serve as nice home decor for your bookshelves, and highlight where you have traveled to.
